How to Win Friends and Influence People

Dale Carnegie made the inconvenient point that almost every system still contains people.

Somewhere in the middle of my Patras bicycle-and-audiobook period, business kept collapsing back into people. You can understand the product, the arithmetic and the strategy, then lose the room because another human being felt ignored, embarrassed or pushed.

The title has a whiff of manipulation. The practical material is built around attention: remember names, listen properly, show genuine interest, criticize with care and leave people enough dignity to move with you.

None of this is decorative. Human relationships are the operating environment of companies, negotiations, teams and families. Even the cleanest technical decision eventually passes through a nervous system with pride, fear, memory and a calendar.

Any social skill can be used cheaply. I kept the more useful lesson: understand the person in front of you well enough to communicate without unnecessary friction. That is difficult work, particularly when you are convinced the logic should be sufficient.

The book gave the finance reading a missing human layer. Money moves through incentives; decisions move through people.
