LinkedIn: Just finished reading Marvin Minsky's "The Society Of Mind"

It was very insightful to see his divide and conquer approach. He breaks down mental processes into a hierarchy of k-lines, nemes, polynemes, isonomes, and other agents that, as a whole, make up human intelligence.

Deep learning models have been advancing rapidly, demonstrating the validity of Minsky's ideas. Neural networks essentially represent the interaction of elementary parts that, as a whole, create intelligence.

I am truly amazed by the materialized version of these theoretical concepts. OpenAI's GPT, with its one trillion parameters, showcases a remarkable manifestation of these ideas, achieving a highly convincing understanding and generation of human language.

I think that #ExplainableAI is closely aligned with Minsky's vision. As AI systems become more complex and powerful, we will definitely need such tools to make AI more transparent and accountable.

I really liked Minsky's writing. He provides very clear definitions for building blocks, which he then uses to build up complex concepts that are nonetheless easy to understand. Some elementary pictures and graphs also help.

Finally, I was intrigued by his view on emotions, which, according to Minsky, are not separate from cognitive processes. Essentially, emotions are high-level control mechanisms that simplify decision-making and help us efficiently face complexity – albeit not always successfully :)
