The Physics Was The Easy Part
I set out to make a standing wave visible in fire. The materials had several lessons ready.
I built this Rubens tube for a demonstration-experiments course in the physics laboratory. Feed sound into one end and the standing wave appears in fire along the tube. It is difficult to ask for a better physics demonstration.
The theory was familiar. I expected the build to cost roughly EUR 100. It ended closer to EUR 700, which was a very serious amount of money for me then. The equation had neglected procurement.
My first tube was PVC because it was cheap and wonderfully easy to drill. The flames pointed upwards, so I convinced myself that aluminium tape and insulation around the holes would protect the plastic. Heat transfer reviewed the proposal and rejected it. The tube softened, curved and began developing opinions about its own geometry.
I started again with metal. Every hole now required patience, the correct drill bit and a much better relationship with heat. Then came the speaker, gas fittings, pressure, sealing, measurements, supports and the small problem of making all of them behave together.
That was the real lesson. Theory can remove the intellectual mystery while leaving materials, tolerances, tools, sequencing, cost and failed prototypes entirely for you. You can understand the wave equation perfectly and still be standing beside the wrong tube.
When it finally worked, the flames traced the wave beautifully. I demonstrated it for the course; afterwards the department seemed understandably cautious about operating a three-metre metal tube filled with gas, and I do not know whether it was used again.
Still, none of the work disappeared. The project taught me how far reality sits from a clean diagram, and the drilling lessons returned years later while repairing my motorcycle. The tube made sound visible. Building it made engineering visible.
