Why My Van Has No Solar Panels
Weeks of calculations put an EcoFlow alternator charger ahead of the roof project.
I wanted solar on the Ford Custom. I like the technology, I like the independence, and a van roof looks suspiciously like unused real estate.
I also want the van to remain visually ordinary. A low-profile installation was possible, so I spent weeks returning to the question: panels, mounting, cable runs, weather, energy yield, cost, and what the system would actually give me.
The calculation kept pointing at the alternator. I would want alternator charging even with solar, and the van already spends part of its life moving. Every drive could replenish the battery quickly and predictably, including at night, under clouds and in rain.
My hierarchy became simple: dependable charging first, optional generation later. The alternator occupied the first slot. The roof could wait.
Then came the price hunt. I eventually found the EcoFlow alternator charger and matching battery at roughly 40% below the usual total and drove to Germany to collect them. At that discount, the numbers finally stopped arguing.
Installation meant exposing the Ford's starter battery, routing a thick cable through the cabin, protecting it with a fuse and deciding where every connection could live without becoming a future problem. For a while, the van looked as if it had lost an argument with an electrician.
The system worked. It charges quickly while I drive, the battery and charger behave like one system, and the van still looks like an ordinary Ford from outside.
Solar may still earn its way onto the roof one day. For now, every drive can leave the battery charged, and the system has behaved exactly as I hoped.
