Walking The Vouraikos Railway
Tracks, tunnels, July heat and a river waiting at the end.
In July 2017 we followed the railway through Vouraikos Gorge. Tracks make a strangely satisfying path. The route has already made its decision; your contribution is to keep walking.
The line moved across iron bridges, into tunnels and along rock that looked cut open specifically to let it pass. Shade came in useful little sections. Greece was operating at full July temperature.
Every tunnel reset the temperature and the eyes. Then the rock opened again and the gorge returned, larger than it had looked from the previous turn.
By the end, getting into the river felt less like a decision than the final item in the route description.
The day had rails, tunnels and a river. Planning was apparently solvable.
