The iPhone 14 Kitchen Timer
A successful screen repair, a dead antenna, and the most overqualified timer in the kitchen.
An old iPhone 14 from my ex had been sitting around with a shattered screen. Throwing away a computer because its glass lost an argument still feels wrong to me, so eventually I opened the iFixit kit.
This was familiar territory. I had replaced other iPhone screens before, along with a microphone and a speaker. Tiny screws, adhesive, connectors and the constant awareness that one impatient movement can create a more interesting repair.
The new screen worked perfectly. Touch, colour and display all came back. Then I discovered that the phone also had an antenna problem.
That removed most of the useful lives I had imagined for it: spare phone, test device, something to experiment with jailbreaking, or simply another small computer connected to the world. I could probably continue. Time has become the rarer replacement part.
The repair still earned the phone a job. It now lives in the kitchen as a timer.
A whole iPhone counting down pasta is ridiculous. It is also better than a drawer.
